Robert Harris Intense Shot


The Robert Harris "Intense shot" brief was unique and fun. It sounded right our my alley.

Apart from the written script and limited budget, the challenge was to find ways to tell the story visually and translate the intense work the team at Robert Harris has put into their new product. After a few meetings and brainstorm sessions, we came up with some ideas to make this work.

We shot on the Panasonic EVA1 with an external Shogun Prores recorder. We used a set of Sigma cine zooms for most of the shots and for the closeup shots we used a Laowa 24mm Probe Lens. We were able to capture some outstanding close ups which opened up a whole new world of the way we usually see coffee beans.

Young & Shand got in touch to create a Brand ad for Hellers.

We managed to find great talent for this rather a quicky little ad.

We travelled to Christchurch and spent a few days with our new friends.

The Brand Film had a significant impact on their sales and won the "Colmar Brunton Ad Impact Award" in October 2018.

Shot on Arri Alexa Mini with some Sigma Cine Zoom lenses, the outcome was fantastic.

Haka Fusion. One of my personal favourites.

We were contacted by the Creative Director asking me if this is possible to create something similar like the "Adele Music video - Send My Love" but with more intense RGB colours. I was very excited about this brief since this one was a very arty brief and once again in a budget range where we had to be pretty smart.

We could've shot this on a green screen but wanted to keep the real look plus I wanted to be able to light it the way I wanted. It was essential to have control over the colour effect in the post as well as over the opacity. I was pushing to shot on Arri Alexa Mini because of its high-end natural look and 200fps were very important to have creative control over the speed the talents were performing.

We ended up shooting our talents on black and ended up Rotoscoping some elements because I wanted to get pretty intense colours. It was an awesome project, and I'm proud of how it turned out.

We also shot the hero still for Maori TV has the use for some print ads.

It needed careful attention in the planning so we could deliver what he had in mind.

Kelloggs is an excellent brand, great products. It was very excited to be approached by the Kelloggs Brand agency Akkomplice from Melbourne.

They wanted to run a campaign tailored to NZ.

We helped the best we could.

We looked after all casting aspects, location scouting, shot on Arri Alexa Mini and some the Sigma Cine Zooms and a great crew. A superb outcome.

We were approached by Lujo to take part in the Re-Brand.

What a day. A location like that, some stunning drone shots in the morning plus shooting on the RED Epic with cinematic dolly moves was great fun.

Beside the Brand Film and multiple pieces of content about the actual products, part of the brief was to create some Cinemagraphs.

I decided on the RED Epic because of its colour depth and 6k Raw capability. This way I was able to get some large files 6k motion imagery out of the camera to make some great looking, high res Cinemagraphs for the refresh of the new Lujo website.

Niue. A tiny little island in the middle of the Pacific.

I was lucky enough to be working on the Niue tourism brand campaign with some very talented people. The Brief was challenging, but we pulled it off.

It was a series of three pieces which concentrated on the journey of real people in one long voice-over driven drone shot to tell their story matching the new brand line.

"Real people, Real Niue."

Apart from the films and some beautiful stills, we created some VR content to promote the beauty of Niue island. That content has successfully been used on trade shows to take people on a virtual tour around the stunning and magical locations on Niue Island.

A great project to be involved. My favorite rock in the Pacific.

Little wins every day was a fun little idea for Lotto's Keno.

We shot on Sony F5 with a RAW recorder to get some 240fps slow-motion. We had to be smart here to make this work within the budget. We pulled it off, and the ads have been a success for the brand and the agency.

Every brief is different. This one was a special one. Yes, we could've shot a POV idea on a simple GoPro setup. It would've been certainly lighter to carry in terms of weight rather than wearing a fully rigged up helmet over three days in a row.

The GoPro setup wouldn't have given us much control over focus, exposure, depth of field and many other details.

After the initial meeting talking about the idea with the creative team, I came up with the plan to rig up a helmet with a Blackmagic Micro camera which records 12bit ProRes files and will grade up nicely. On top, we have the option to change the lens if we need it plus has given us not only control over the image. We were able to rig it up, so the team was able to get a live feed from what I was doing.

I became the DoP, Director as well as the talent itself. Great project.

The crash with the bike in video three was scripted to happen with the skateboard. After one of the pedals came off, we were able to show an actual crash with the bike. Thankfully the camera was rolling, creatives and clients very quickly decided to change the script to match the hilarious bike footage.

Visa Checkout was a fun & talent driven project with three ads to promote VISA's new product. The ads had a great response and were also shown overseas in the Australasia and South American Market.

Shot on Arri Amira with some Zeiss Primes, it was a fun shoot and we had some great laughs.

That was the very first project in years of experience which was signed off by everyone on the very first offline edit.

Oh sorry, we had one change, we needed to add one second to the end frame.

The four BNZ Advantage pieces turned out great. I shot on RED 5k, 100fps gave me the ability to time ramp to the important bits to tell our story.
